Spring into training

Spring can be a great time to train. The weather is mild, the skies are often sunny. It’s a perfect time to get back in the pool, to lubricate the bike chain and to get new running shoes to add spring to you step.
As you and your family are doing all of that, remember that spring is also a time when you really need to remember to STAY HYDRATED. The outside temeratures are not as hot as they will be in a few months, so you may trick yourself into not drinking as much as you would in say, July. Your body still needs that all-essential water to keep it going. The more hydrated you are, the better you will recover and the better your next workout will be.
The National Athletic Trainers Association recommends that children under 90 lbs. drink 3 to 6 oz. of fluid one hour before any activity. Children that weigh more than 90 lbs. should drink 6 to 12 oz. of fluid an hour before activity. For youth who know they’ll be performing strenuous activity, hyper-hydrate with 16 to 32 oz. 30 minutes to an hour before exercise. Make sure your child’s body is ready for this by hydrating the same way during training as they will likely hydrate come race day.
In order to stay hydrated keep water or energy drinks on hand before, during and after excercise. Because energy drinks are so sweet and yummy kids may want to only consume them and leave out the water. A good rule of thumb is to treat energy drinks like a suppliment but rely on good old H2O for proper hydration.
